The Notebook (2004)

I guess this is a movie based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks.

It’s a story between two young boy and a girl (Noah and Allie) who meet at a carnival and fall in love. Allie leaves the town back to her home in the city. Her mother does not like the fact that her daughter is dating a poor country boy so she destroys all the letters he sends her. She doesn’t know that, gets engaged and comes back to him when she finds out that he purchased and fixed the house which he wanted to do since they were kids. So, they get married. She seems to have memory problems when she’s old, but the husband is still besides her. And they die together, side by side, holding hands.

Aww… how romantic…

It’s been more than a month since I watched this movie, and I am still very angry about it. It’s plot is suitable for maybe Jr. High kids. Same old story where they get separated and then meets somehow then falls in love and dying together. I, for some reason, figured out the entire plot within about the first 10 minutes of watching it. It was pretty obvious about the old man and woman as soon as he started telling the story to the woman. And of course, they will get back together, why not? Who wants to see a movie where the parents succeed in separating the two and them going their own ways?

But, what about Lon, the soldier and a lawyer who was engaged to Allie and later gets dumped? How is this story romantic for him? He spent lots of money, they were engaged, and he trusted her not to do something stupid because he even asks “is this something I should be worried about” when the girl says she has to go somewhere without giving a specific reason. So, his fiancee cheats on him, then dumps him when he finds out although she was “going to” go back to him.. I guess. So, there’s nothing romantic about that. I mean, she is a cheater. They both violated 7th commandment which forbids committing adultery, and the guy violated 10th commandment by wanting someone else’s wife(fiancee). As soon as I saw Lon’s appearance, I thought to myself, “that poor bastard”.. As soon as I saw them getting engaged, I said “Well, that guy’s gonna be very disappointed..”

What did the woman get at the end? She now has severe dementia, her memory comes back and goes, and now the guy has to suffer with that. Of course, I am not saying that she shouldn’t have had dementia and he should leave his sick wife. But, what if they did go their own ways? If she stayed with the lawyer, maybe they would have caught her illness much earlier and maybe her condition would be much better off now? If he met someone else and gotten married to that person, maybe he didn’t need to cry himself to sleep every night? I admire the fact that he is very committed to his wife. But, is it possible that they were not meant to be together?

For those two, maybe their story is very romantic. Maybe, many young girls and women who watched this movie desires to have a great love story as they have (but, hold on, is it possible that you will be Lon instead of Allie? For every Allie out there, there’s gotta be Lon for this story to be true.. also, whether they like it or not, Allie DID cheat, so she’s a cheater.. just saying if you think you wanna be her.. or him). I think this is a great movie for teenage girls when they are having a slumber party, cry at the end of the movie and dream about the romantic love they will have in the future. Other than that, it’s a same old love story made into a movie.
